« on: February 22, 2012, 20:03 »
has anyone grown a kiwi fruit plant from wilkinsons, there only about 4 quid at the moment and im tempted to buy one.

i was also watching the alan titchmarsh show the other day and they said there where two types of kiwis that grew (smooth and hairy), i just wonderd whether the wilko ones where the hairy or smooth varieties?

id be very grateful for any help,
thanks,
matt

Hi Matt

I thought about buying one last year, from wilko's,but if I recall you need 2, male and female

at least to produce fruit, and can take several years.

I bought one from DT Brown which is self fertile ,and according to them will start producing

fruit this year albeit a small amount, and then more from then on.

The fruit is only a bit bigger than a grape and smooth, but there is supposed to be loads of

them.

I think it cost me 7.99

i bought a kiwi plant from a bargain/pound type shop a few years back but as mentioned you need a male & female ,  but it has grown ok in south wales and hasnt died in some pretty harsh weather and has been flowering, obviously no fruit though.

Reminds me, I've got some Kiwi fruit seeds sitting in my tin that I didn't get around to sowing last year.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The ones from Wilkinson's are the Jenny variety, which are self-fertile supposedly.

I have an 'oriental delight' which is also self fertile and supposedly a vigourus grower but I've had it 3 years and I don't think it's even grown a foot yet!

I've bought a Jenny from Wilkos ...  so am hoping for fruit.  At the moment it is shooting very healthly against a south facing wall.
