Pigeons
« on: February 09, 2012, 07:28 »
I wish I had the eyesight of a pigeon. The weight of the snow caused a small tare in the netting over my cauliflowers.  I could see the leaves had been atrtacked but it took ages to find the source of entry.  How on earth can they see a small hole like that from up above?   Grrrrrr!!!!  I need a gun!
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Trust me, they have nothing better to do than to look for tiny openings.

The crafty little blighters land on the netting and peck through the holes. Sometimes they make the holes bigger by pulling leaves through, so there may not have been a break in the netting before they got there.

They sure do!  My fleece was ripped to shreds so now I have had to switch to the beefier Enviromesh  :)

I like watching pigeons :) In the field next to my house, they just kind of land and graze like a flock of sheep. And sometimes the flock is 50 or more birds strong, so I guess they'd make short work of a cabbage or cauli. But strangely enough, even with all those birds they never touch my brassicas, and they're not netted.

Pigeon proof brassicas...  Whow!  where did you get the seeds from?

PS.  You are not allowed to enjoy watching pigeons!!

i must say the only thing that has kept our pigeons at bay was my heavy duty nets [old scaffolding nets] the only thing was where the Brussels sprouts had grown through the net the pigeons had a feast

I've tried  spraying the brassicas with animal spray deterrent spent all of one day setting the plants out after spraying to find next day all the plants had been eaten

i think a good quality net is essential to keep these predators off your brassicas and other delights they mite fancy

I am hoping to do something different this year. I have a few pairs of old tights and I am going to put them over the cabbages when I transplant them in the hopes that it will keep the pigeons and whitefly and butterflies off and stretch to accomodate the cabbages.
