Potatoes, Slugs, and Stones
« on: November 05, 2011, 17:40 »
Chatting to a fellow plot holder today, 4 plots away from mine. I dug up my remaining spuds about a month ago - 50% of my Desiree had been eaten by slugs, and about 75% of my Maris Piper. I had assumed that I had left them in the ground too long.
Most of Dev's are still in the ground - his Desiree and Maris Piper are absolutely fine. He puts it down to the fact that there's a fair few stones & bits of rubble in his plot, whereas mine is free from stones - he reckon's slugs don't like stones. Is he right? Should I be chucking a few stones in mine?  :)

Slugs love to hide under stones as they hold the moisture and keep them hidden from birds etc.,  I think he may be pulling your leg.

On our allotment site, some have had problems with slugs and others not. Here, it seems to correspond with manure (slugs) or not.

For us, I think we had a relatively dry early summer for Cornwall, so no blight until later but it pushed the slugs deeper down into the soil and maybe the manure held more moisture for them?

What about putting nematodes on the plot where you are growing potatoes they are  natural and eat slugs and there eggs, I am contemplating doing this next year as I had the same problem all except for my Kestrel potatoes not affected at all as the are slug resistant, Mike.

Im fairly new to growing stuff, infact I dont have green fingers lol but I have a half plot which i managed to get last easter.  It was very over grown and was infested with slugs and snails.

After digging it over I used some pet / child friendly slug pellets from the pound shop and it seems to have kept them at bay, when i dug up the king edwards i put in i found perhaps 3/4 spuds that had snuffed it due to slug attacks  :D
