Bluberries have arrived!
« on: November 05, 2011, 13:55 »
Another newbie question!!

I have received my three blueberry plants this morning, along with three rhubarb crowns.

I have covered the bottom of my bath with stones for drainage and have two bags of ericasious compost ready to go in.

The plants have been delivered in clumps of soil in bags rather than pots.
Should I be doing anything in particular with them before I plant them?

Just give them some water in the bag (punch a few holes in bag bottom first), so they can soak up water to rehydrate a bit, then carefully shift the contents to your prepared holes. I'd add some blood fish and bonemeal.

If you have it, I highly recommend mycorrhyzal bacteria, a powdery type of root stimulant, sprinkled directly on the root area just prior to planting. This will give your plant roots a real power boost and you'll get bigger plants next year. If you don't have it, then don't fret.

Other than that, let the blueberries get on it with.

I assume that the rhubarb won't be planted in the bath with the blueberries?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I sprinkle about a handful per hole, scratch it in, then plant. This will provide future nutrients for the plant as it takes anywhere from 3-6 months for the nutrients to become available to the plant. Bonemeal is a very slow release food.
