When to buy more chickens??
« on: November 02, 2011, 18:37 »

Is there such thing as a 'right' time of year to buy chickens??

Every man, woman and dog in our families are now asking for eggs!  So we would like to increase our flock to cope.

Just this week, we've had to go out for the first time and buy eggs!

You can buy them most of the year around but bear in mind that most hens will lay less if not stop completely over winter.

Also when new birds are introduced to the flock this can effect laying all round until the birds settle in withe each other!

Oh and I hate buying eggs as well in the winter    seems so daft when theres all those chooks running around!

Sorry slightly off thread, but I had to buy some eggs today and felt sooo guilty  Mine are on medicines at the moment so we cant eat their eggs for a while, but I still felt like I was betraying them

I have read a few times that Faverolles are good winter layers. I hope that my one will do just that once she is old enough.

With the dark evenings now, most people only get to spend some time with the chucks on the weekend.  If you are in this group I would wait until the Spring to add to your flock.

Good winter layers but 'only' up to 140 eggs per year.
