bolotti with a skin condition
« on: October 03, 2011, 17:43 »
I have grown borlotto lingus di fuoco for 2 years now.  i leave them to mature as I want hthe beans not pods.  however when i harvest the beans and shell them from the pods, they have brown patches on the skin (that are not part of the markings)  some have it worse than others.  if you peel the skin off, the inside of the bean is fine.  last year i Ate them anyway - waste not want not, but I would like to know what it is. i thought it may be some kind of rust but there's nothing on the pods.  anybody got any ideas or had similar?

That's a bit odd  :(

Do you have a piccie you could post?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Not a clue as to the solution but I also had this problem with these beans.

I would love to know why they had the brown blotches on them.

The seed I saved from some runner beans are doing the same thing, as they dry, and I don't know what it is either ::)

My borlottis seem fine, its the first year I`ve grown them.I haven`t watered the plants since they were in the ground about 3 weeks.I often thought I should, but didn`t have the time.Perhaps they don`t like pampering or a lot of water?

Since that`s the only variable I can offer,I obviously have no answer.

I want to grow many more next year,so shall be interested to see if you find the answer to your problem.

hi, i had a look at the link re:athracnose infection.  i don't think its that as the plants themselves are fine and healthily green, no blemishes on the pods either. i wonder if its just the cold damp northern summer and the beans are just going  'a bit manky' .  i grew the same seed this year as i did last so i think i will get some new seed from a different supplier and try again next year.  see what happens.

I agree with you slugwarrior. I`m sure it`s merely the pods staying damp for a period of time as the beans are drying.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?
