poorly chicks
« on: August 31, 2011, 19:37 »
I have two chickens which are now about two years old.  They both have laid an occasional egg over the last six months or so but they are very fragile and not useable, and although they seem ok they are both quite thin, one of them has no feathers underneath and the skin seems very red.  I have been putting vet spray on it but still no feathers have grown.  I haven't seen the chicken plucking them so have no idea why she has lost them.  They are fed on good quality layers pellets, corn, fresh veg, have plenty of grit and oyster shell and mealworms as a treat.  They have full freedom in the garden, so I feel that I doing the best I can but neither of my girlies seem well - any ideas please.

RE the feathers - they should grow back around moulting time, usually but not always, autumn.

I would stop all treats and just feed layers as it may be an unbalanced diet with all the treats (it may not be).

You may need to consider the vet and hopefully some other suggestions may be given :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
