Autumn Peas Meteor variety
« on: August 23, 2011, 09:31 »
Hi

I'm thinking of growing these over winter. Never grown peas before. What is the harvesting period of peas, is it a couple of months like Runners or are they just ready all at once?

Thanks.

mostly all at once. Pick and freeze is the way to go  :)

Thanks.

So the packet states the harvest starts in May do you think they'll be done by start of june so I can use the ground for Courgettes?

Also do you blanch peas for freezing or not bother?

I'm not sure about over-wintered peas...I've never bothered to try.
I plant my peas mid March and they're usually over by mid June....but it does, of course, depend on the weather.

I put courgettes/pumpkins in after peas....but most years I have to move them up to a bigger pot before they can be planted out.

I prefer blanch peas, to make sure they can be stored for a long while :)

Peas over Winter can be good but are often a disappointment. You will loose some plants during the Winter so plant plenty. Hard weather, pigeons, slugs, pea weevil and various diseases all take their toll. In the Spring you can decide whether to leave them to crop or to hoe them up and replant.

If you have not grown peas before it may be better to sow an early Spring variety.

Courgettes can be planted close alongside the pea row if the peas are not finished. Just be careful you do not put your feet on them when you pick peas.

I grow these since last November, the pods are big and nearly ready. I used banboo canes and wondering if I can just put some climbing French beans in now so they can germinate in soil and by the time they come out the pea will be gone and the banboo canes can be used again?
Rain at night, sunshine all day long!

Why not start your beans in pots/trays and then transplant once the peas are out?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
