How are your Butternuts doing?
« on: August 09, 2011, 12:30 »
Hi all,

My Butternuts are growing ok (foliar) but only 1 plant out of 4 has a half decent sized fruit on it (about the size of a pear) one of the other plants has lots of little grape size fruits on it and the other 2 have none.

Can i expect to get any ripe fruit off these plants this year as were nearing Autum now!

How are your Butternuts in comparison?

Mine score nil points this year  :tongue2:

and is answer to your question, there is still time to get decent fruit.

This time last year my plants were yomping theirway round the plot, setting frtuit every couple of feet as they went

and this year --- no female flowers and no yomping  :( :(

My 3 Winter Festival squashes are the same as Sunny's.  :(

They were planted late because of the frosts, then it was too cold, too dry, and one of them got munched to a stalk by slugs but is gamely trying to recover (I don't read the paper where they can see it in case they can read the date!)  ::)

(Getting the usual embarrassment of courgettes now though!)  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

My butternut squash is dreadful so far - and, this was the last year I was going to try it, as all other attempts have been unsuccessful. One is in the green house and is very long now, but no sign of flowers or fruit. The other is in an open coldframe - this one is showing signs of male flowers but they haven't opened...yet. >:(

Acorn Squash, Thelma Sanders, Uchiki Kuri, Bush Delicata, Sunshine and spaghetti squashes are setting fruit as normal, so I will get some this year  :D

Butternuts zilch set and poor growth, Turks Turban 1 baby that I've fingers crossed for, Marina di chioggia just got female flowers today :)
Lungha di Napoli and Musquee de Provence  lots of growth no females yet :(

It seems that here, anyway, the smaller ones are doing much better than the big plant/big fruit ones

Acorns turned into triffids loads of fruit but developed powdery mildew very early.  Golden Hubbard very good. nice large fruit ripening nicely.  These went out in the cold and were nursed along with cloches

Butternut a different story one fruit on each plant.  These went out late May when it was dry and hot.

Maybe it was the hot dry spell we had that did for them all

My courgettes are already a bit mildewy too

Seems to me reading all these experiences that you need to put out a variety of types so that those that go well will make up for those that don't.  And you can't easily tell what will be good or bad in a season

I only grow Butternuts and green and yellow courgettes.

I grew patty pans one year thinking they were winter squashes and they went mouldy in storage, OH said she didn't like the look of them either  :nowink:

I sometimes grow pumpkins too but never got around to it this year.

Butternuts are our favourites though so a little gutted that the results are poor this year.

The plant's enormous - currently about (4' x 5') with plenty of flowers forming.

We gave up growing butternuts because we found other varieties were both easier and nicer than them. Our favourite by far is Anna Schwartz (Real Seeds), which grows fast, big, and tasty.

Last year we also had great success with Invincible; this year we are growing crown prince, which i think is a similar variant. We are also growing turks turban, something that might be festival, and one other (Tennessee Sweet potato?).

We've got reasonable results so far with all (1-2 fruit, small-medium sized), but fingers are still crossed.

My Uchiki Kuri, Crown Prince and Rolet Gem are all doing the same thing - growing like triffids, putting off loads and loads of fruit, but none are growing big, all seem to be just staying very small fruit (grape to golf ball size). Some are rotting but most aren't, just not getting any bigger. And this has been going on for weeks and weeks. My courgettes are doing much the same.

Mine have been slow off the mark but seem to be moving now, only a handful of fruit so far though, maybe plum sized.
