Too many butternuts??
« on: July 26, 2010, 21:36 »
I have a butternut squash plant growing on a muck heap.  It's filled the space so I've pinched out all the tips and cut off the bits that have escaped through the rabbit fence.  Tonight I counted the fruit which is mostly hidden under the huge leaves and found 22!!

I've pinched off the smaller ones but still have 16 squash which are a really good size.  The question is can one plant really support this much fruit or should I reduce it further.

As long as you keep it well watered it should be OK -- plenty of food from the muck heap, I'd think  :D :D

How big are the fruits so far?

I would say they are the length of the ones you get in the shops but still bulbous at the bottom with a thinner neck.  The growth they have put on in just the last few days is amazing.  It must be good muck 8)

OMG, I have 8 cobnut plants on the go, none of them have grown to length I was expecting in my head (3 havent crawled across the ground at all just stayed in a bush shape !)

And to add to my misery I can only see 1 cobnut growing on one plant......................... not a resounding success.

Early days yet ... although I think F1 Cobnut starts fruiting early-ish.

I water mine every day (contrary to other things that I want to put some roots down to get their water) - I have a 2L (I think) pot sunk into the ground next to the plant and fill that - so the water percolates out slowly - in reality they get more than 2L per day as some goes straight through,  and I probably slop it about a bit!

My butternuts have only just started to put on a growth spurt and still don't have any flowers...I hope we have a long Summer to give them time to catch up. My courgettes are well behind on last year's growth as well.
