Inter Cropping Asparagus
« on: August 07, 2011, 17:14 »
Can you grow anything alongside Asparagus. I'm considering planting some in raised beds and I wonder whether I could get away with planting carrots, salad leaves or beetroot between the plants?
Are you looking for an allotment (full or to share) in South East Sheffield. PM me for details.

Short answer, no.

You can only crop asparagus up until June. After that you have to let it go and it soon swamps the bed.

You might squeeze a radish in, if you're quick.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I fully agree with DD. When the asparagus plants are young, you might fit in the odd radish, but no lettuce which will swamp the young plants.

When asparagus is mature and/or growing, it produces a massive root system which you can easily damage with intercropping. Best to just dedicate the asparagus bed to asparagus.
