« on: September 18, 2007, 20:30 »
Hi guys and girls,

We have harvested the first of our main crop of carrots, some of which have which have grown to gigantic sizes, forked or have had carrot fly damage.

How have yours been this year? same problems, beaten the pests? or have the best carrots see ever?

Other harvest this week include. The first swede and butternut squashes, beetroot, salads, and runner beans.

Regards

Gosh that's a big un!!!!

I have had my best year for carrots so far, but they are not huge, because I keep digging them up, but I've had very little damage to them.

Hand on head to touch wood!!!!

We`ve had our best carrots ever,I handed over responsibility to my mocking husband who broke all the rules and all carrots germinated,of course this was just luck and my weeding  and thinning were really the thing :? He`ll be doing it next year.Ours are netted so no fly damage ang growing sucess slug pellets meant no slug damage either.

Pardon the observation, ruffmesiter_69, but your carrots look as if they found some fresh manure.  Am I close?

My parsnips and carrots have done really well. My carrots are much smaller than yours Ruffmesiter_69. But I chose to pick 'em young and sweet.

I grew purple ones....Purple Queen I think. They are beeeautiful, really carroty and smell divine too. I will just grow them next year, I also grew Yellowstone, they were not particularly tasty and a poor crop compared to the others.
Life is for living.....permaculture is for life.

Dunno really, the haulm seems to be very very thick where it leaves the root.  I wondered if too much nitrogen was present.  Could simply be the variety - what type are they please?

mine were dodo at the start of the season so planted some new ones very late.. so at the moment I have a carrot fly beating method of growing them in a old water tank... so far they are pretty small but perfectly formed and no damage at all..
