I,m not a confident cabbage grower so I'm not sure what's going on with the savoys and need some help.

Huge outer leaves due to over feeding  but they're getting yellow blotches and changing shape like some insect has got hold of them,BUT , hearts are forming, a lighter yellow green with the wrinkled leaf look. So I am thinking is this change of shape/texture the natural cycle of the savoy as it develops OR something else?

The leaves started off smooth and dark green, again because of over feeding, and now they are changing colour.

Any ideas??

The hearts do tend to be a bit paler than the older outer leaves.
If they are forming hearts there can't be much wrong with them. A picture might help.

I have savoys growing and they do start off smoother. As they heart up they start to wrinkle, but they really shouldn't be going yellowish. Look around and see if you have any sorts of insects feasting.

Or are they the oldest leaves of all, which do tend to die off naturally as time goes by?

If so, you can just carefully pull these off, or wait for them to drop and collect them up for the compost  :)

Good advice thanks. The outer leaves are smooth and dark green as you move in the leaves become paler and the heart is pale. Wrinkles increase as you go.

I see no sign of massive insect infestation. Just a few interested parties buzzing about.

Fingers crossed.

I have eaten the outer leaves. Rich green taste easier to eat than curly kale.

Is it OK to eat the outer leaves while it's hearting, or should they be left there for photosyntesis?

It's OK to eat the outer leaves, but I prefer the less tough inner ones!

How about the outer leaves of red and white cabbage? Are they nice to eat in a stir fry, or too tough? I have to say I do find that chopped up white cabbage (a la supermarket) in a stirfry can be a bit soggy, so maybe the tougher outer leaves would cook better.

Of course they are, chop finely.
