savoy cabbage
« on: February 03, 2010, 00:03 »
My cabbages (Savoy and Tundra) are hearting up but the outside leaves of the Savoy are being eaten away even through the cold weather. It's not slugs, more like caterpillars.....leaving just the veins or lots of small holes like lace.. Hearts seem to be ok at the moment. Not birds or squirrels because the bed is netted and the Tundra are untouched.
Any idea what it could be....sorry....no camera! Do mice do this?

That's a tough question. Mice will eat anything, particularly when other food is lacking. They absolutely adore my green tomatoes  >:( so it could be them. Look for telltale small dark droppings on the leaves which will indicate insects; if no droppings then its likely mice or moles.

Mine look like that and in my garden it is slugs...I find them when I pick the cabbages.
Small black ones, so I have to be careful to soak cabbages in salted water and wash them very well before chopping

I searched for slugs...no joy...and there are no droppings of any sort. Why is whatever it is ignoring the Tundra cabbage? The Savoy looks like lace round the edges but only a couple of the lower leaves on Tundra are nibbled.
I think it MUST be small slugs that have managed to escape the clutches (!!!!) of the chooks because they're in wired and netted off raised beds.Maybe hatched recently or sommat.I'll have to catch them out at night with a torch.
Not tonight........

It`s likely to be Keel slugs, they attack at night and are backing kipping underground by morning. ( Usually ) :D

That's it!! >:(
I've been burbling on and on about slug hunts and slug pubs and slug dustbins (chickens) and being slug free........
Back to the torch-lit hunts that freak out the neighbours......
(mind you might just use the organic blue pellets first to save freezing my socks off.)

VC, can I just say how much I love the cat in your picture!!!! Is it actually your cat, or justa  piccie you've found?
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

It's one of the many you can access if you click to alter your forum profile information. The cat is a "Maine Coon", or at least that's what it says!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've been harvesting my savoys as I don't think they'll get any bigger. The outside
leaves are more hole than leaf and there are keel slugs right inside the heart almost.  :tongue2:
I picked them all, cleaned them up, and am keeping them in the shed. They seem to be keeping ok.
The less time you have, the more becomes available.

P C (are you?) I did indeed get the pic of the Maine Coon off the site but it reminded me of one of my cats who wasn't pure bred (loadsa money) but very similar.  She is now in cat heaven (16 - a stroke) along with a few others that I have loved and I only have 3 now.
