ash in my compost?
« on: March 31, 2008, 21:44 »
I have a metal incinerator in my garden which I only use rarely to burn confidential papers and weeds etc, and someone said I can put the ash into my compost. Is that right, or should I put it in my wheelie bin with the rubbish? thanks.

Can paper / cardboard ash be dug straight into the soil or is it best to compost it? Was thinking about putting it into the bed which I will sow overwintering onions in...

The cardboard and paper should be shredded first or cut into smaller pieces before adding directly to soil. If you want to kill ground top growth, spread over area and leave whole.

I find the above work best as part of the compost levels.

Thanks for the reply Trillium. I have already burned it, and I read that wood ash is supposed to be good for onions, so wondered if cardboard ash would be the same...?

Wood (and other stuff) that you have burnt is commonly referred to as potash. A great fertilizer but you need to make sure that what you burn is "clean". IE it hasnt got anything harmful in it.

If you are sure it hasn't then potash can be a wonderful free fertilizer.

We grew some huge pumpkins where the base/roots of a tree had been reduced to ash. Bit of soil n black gold and they flew away!
