gently dig the earth away from aound a bulb and see how fat it is and if it has split into cloves.
If you like what you see you can lift and start drying them :)

My garlic was ready earlier than expected this year (by around a month) probably due to the very warm weather in April.

I lost most of mine to Onion White Rot!
Goodness only knows where that came from?
Had the garlic planted up in a new 3 x 1 metre raised bed filled with soil, bought in compost and manure.
The crop grew showed well before Winter and picked up strongly in Spring, everybody commented on how well they were doing. Then suddenly, in May, they strated browning off and withering. Onion White Rot had arrived! Like I said earlier- no idea where it came form, not had it on the plot before.
I suspect the wife! She has been asking me to grow her some flowers and now it looks like she'll have  raised bed for her flowers for the next few years!
I suppose it's an ill wind that blows nobody any good!

So was mine, but the heads were mainly a good size still  :D

I'd suspect the garlic you planted.
Was it certified seed garlic or just 'local' garlic? if the latter the commercial growers probably have it in their fields so you planted garlic and white rot at the same time :(

Hi Mum,
I bought two lots of garlic and planted up a bed for my mate on his plot- which turned out great- large heads all now plaited adn  hanging up in his kitchen.
I thought iat first it was the garlic, that brought the disease, but if that was so it would have affected my mate's crop as well- since it was the same seed.

The deterioration on mine was so swift it ws like they had been sprayed with it.

I think it has to be on the bought in compost - only yhting that makes sense to me.
