Which is the best garlic to grow for good crops and awsome taste, not to mention one that stores well ?

Cannot give a specific name/type. The last I grew was from Sainsbury's veggy section. :flower:
Neighbour is purchasing some from The Garlic Farm, IoW.
These should be ideal for the UK, try "garlic farm" in a search engine and have a read.
If I recall they do a pack of 3 or 4 for about £9.
Remember to let them get cold for a while before planting as this is what makes them form multiple cloves. I simply put them in the fridge for a couple of weeks - seems to work fine.

From what i read they are planted in october, do you start them in pots and plant out next year or straight in the ground ?

I have order a couple of variaties from of the IOW ones.

Thanks

I have previously planted mine about Feb-March, then harvested late August. Been good so far.

Seems that planting Sept-Oct is popular and successful. I would guess that they should get a cold spell over the winter to form multiple cloves. But my opinion is that the fridge is a bit more definite.

So I will this year plant cloves out quite soon (today is a possibility) straight in the ground, the garlic is in the fridge as I type, been there 3 weeks.

Seems either is successful so take your choice, could try both.

one note about autumn planting is make sure you choose a well drained area of your plot if you can (speaking from experience)
feed the soil not the plants

I agree with Shaun - garlic doesn't like to sit in puddles. If your soil tends to get soggy, then create a small raised area just for the garlic so the cloves sit in soil above the rest of the ground. Simply heaping up good, amended soil will do the trick rather than creating wood framing or such. When you plant each clove, you can also mound the soil above each clove a bit to encourage water runoff during rain.
