has my broccoli bolted
« on: July 06, 2011, 11:44 »
Ive got yellow flowers appearing on my broccoli. Up to last week it was looking good but I went away for 3 days and come back to see yellow flowers where there should be nice green broccoli. So why does this happen and can the plants be saved? Its my 1st try at any brassicas so any info will be most welcomed.
R.I.P Bobby Smiler Smith......love you always little fella.

I had this my first go too, i find sprouts easier to grow.

They must have been stressed at som point, i find that watering every 3 days seems to cure most problems with mine. you still get the odd one that bolts but most come good.

They didnt get watered for about 4 days over the hot weekend we just had so could that be the stress point?

More than likely something before then.

Did they have domed heads on them?
And when did you plant them?

they were sewn from seed about the mid April if i remember rightly then planted out early June. They've been netted well since planting out. I'd say they had a loose dome shape to the florets.

heres a pic taken last Wednesday

You'll be best pulling them out and putting something in their place.
The plant changes once it's bolted and won't do any good.

If you chit some courgette seeds then plant direct you may get a crop or french beans

I don't think that's true for broccoli, stompy.
Once you take the top head off it usually grows more side shoots............you just have to pick those really small and tight as they won't get as big as the top head did.

I know that if you pick brocollii spears you get more but i read that once the plant has flowered (buds have opened) the chemicals in the plant change and it doesn't produce properly again?

Im not 100% but prety certain

MOS is right Stompy, one of ours did just that, and after a few days, we had some great tight spears appearing just below the cut-off point.

Not sure how long they'll go on though, just waiting to find out!

My calabrese started going to seed as soon as the heads appeared. Since then though the plants have been putting forth shoots right, left and centre and I've been picking them regularly.   There are still some flowering ones though but at least they're not all going to seed at the same time, if you know what I mean  :)  So don't pull em up !
