Any idea what's wrong with my Summer Squash?
« on: June 27, 2011, 12:09 »
Down at the allotment yesterday I noticed that my Patty Pan Summer Squash leaves are wilting. It's just a couple of leaves which look like there are no veins in half of it, so to speak. Is this some kind of mildew or bug problem? We've recently had lots of rain but yesterday was burning hot sun, so not sure whether it needs more or less water. On the other squash plants I've noticed bright yellow circlular spots although not too many. Any ideas?

they do wilt in strong sun, but recover as the day cools.
As long as they are not dry at the roots, it shouldn't be a problem.

One yesterday on my plot looked like it had bought it, but the leaves were back to normal this morning. Gave it a good drink.

Luckily they hadn't gone crispy -- no return from crispy

Thanks to all. I'll try and take some photos this evening. I'm sure other allotment holders must think I'm mad - staring at the plants for ages. x ::)

Here are the pics. Some of the yellow spots I mentioned and the wilting of leaves. Another allotment holder said it could be due to overwatering and I'd only just watered them again. Never mind. Anyway let me know what you think?

I'd doubt it would be overwatering... If the same thing in different photos. Are they in manure or manured?

I haven't manured the whole bed but did place some bought horse manure from a garden centre into the planting hole. Have done it with lots of other plants and it hasn't affected them. x

That last one looks very much like a problem I have had in my greenhouse since early this year, which I assume to be some kind of powdery mildew. It has affected almost everything that I have started in the greenhouse and I have the worst crop of tomatoes in 20 years.
It started with early seedlings in February and most recently I have a squash seedling which looks like yours.
I have tried the bicarbonate spray solution but it is still there. I have just dusted everything with a sulphur compound but the affected plants are past it.

On those yellowing wrinkles of bleeched out leaves, I would go for that then. Having no better idea right now. Different plants have different tolerance levels. Against my verdict: I did not hear corguettes being particularly sensitive.

The wholes and even the powdery fairy rings might be something entirely different. The latter might possibly be just mildew in a strange display.

If I were anywhere near right, they all should do just about right. Some exceptions for the yellow wrinkly ones.

Let us know of any further developments.

Have you considered cucumber mosaic virus? Not sure which variety you're growing, but some are (I gather) more or less prone to it than others...

The leaves with the lighter patches may just be a chimaera which is something like varigation on ornamental plants and sometimes occurs naturally.

The wilting is probably due to a poor root system and will happen on hot days until the roots grow out wider.

The leaf on the top just looks like it has been scorched. I'd cut it off :)

Not sure this will help but put a pop bottle up side down into the soil along side plants with the bottom cut off and water thru this. Also take off the worst leafs and give them a good feed with a liquid feed.
Thinking behind this is increase air flow, less water on leafs and boost plant to increase growth.
