Advice on Stalosan F needed please
« on: June 27, 2011, 11:57 »
Hi everyone. Been reading up on Stalosan F as I'm not going to be able to move my girls to new ground just yet and want to freshen the earth. What I can't seem to find on it is whether you can sprinkle it in an outside run and keep the hens on it immediately - will there be a problem if the birds ingest it whilst pecking about?

Thanks in anticipation because you are such a knowledgeable lot on here!

Hi Helen

As far as I know Stalosan F is non toxic. My hens covered run is on slabs and I use easibed. In spite of the run being covered the easibed can still get damps & smelly in this weather and I sprinle a little Stalosan F into it to dry it & disinfect it.

If you look at about page 21 of the above link it gives a report on toxicity or lack of.

I have certainly never had any problems with it. Just stick with the guidelines on how much to use.

Hope this helps.

Helen

Hi,

We use it in our coop and run and have been using with our chicks since they were 2 weeks old. It says on our tub that it is inert to humans and animals. Basically totally safe as far as I can tell unless you are a nasty germ.

We just sprinkle a handful (normally less as guess everyone's hand is different) once a week. Not had any bad effect on our animals so far and we've used it for about 4 months.

I don't need to use it inside the coop, but outside as my hens free range and at the moment it's greenery free and like a mud bath. I doubt Stalisan F or biodri (which looks really good) will be of use to dry it up but I would like to disinfect the earth to get rid of any worm burden.

I'll get ordering the Biodri tonight!

We use Bio dri after reading reviews in Practical poultry-It does the same job as Stalosan F but is much much cheaper!  It's completely safe and keeps the litter beautifully fresh when used a couple of times a week  :D
