Heritage peas
« on: June 21, 2011, 08:03 »
What heritage peas is anyone growing?

Are they good or have they exposed why they are heritage e.g. leggy or disease prone?

Edited to correct spelling of "heritage" for search purposes.

I am trying telegraph, they grow tall, I have just had to pull up a row of 6 week old Alderman as they were infected with root rot.

i tried alderman last year but wasn't particularly impressed so didn't bother this year, thought the height would be an advantage but found it just meant they were higher maintenance, although think that would apply to any tall growing peas

It's really the old fashioned strains that have been kept in families for generations.

I'm growing several varieties now for harvest, that I've nurtured for a few years from just 10 seed from the HSL. Their names will really mean nothing as they are not on the open market - "Stokesley" & "Parsley".

I've passed a few of these onto others and most agree that "Stokesley" are one of the sweetest & most productive they've tasted. You'll have to ask the big seed producers why we've got such a poor selection these days.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm growing Victoriana and Purple Podded. They are both tall varities and  prolific croppers. The purple podded have a more creamy texture, rather nice!

Are these the same variety DD?

However, 3.9p per seed is enough to make my eyes water!

They're the ones - interesting that ones I've raised as a seed guardian have made it onto the market!

I've got a 36' row in the plot that cost me nothing!

Here's a close up of my plants from a couple of years ago that shows the tendrils clearly & why they're called "Parsley".

They're actually rather beautiful, DD. Completely different to the cultivars being sold. What do they taste like?

Peas are great, but to be honest, I've never tried the tendrils, I suppose I should - looks like plenty of them this year.

I like the tendrils and tops - I grow them specially to put in my salads, they'd look lovely I reckon

A bit chuffed as I'd never seen them on sale before, but I'd prefer it if they were cheaper. I raised loads at no cost to HSL.

not so old as to class as Heritage, but my Alderman tall peas have been drawing lots of interest, with people asking which variety they are.
One of the OBs asked to try a pod that was fattening, and he announced that he was going to grow them next year. So of course I'm really pleased.

Going to try to source Magnum Bonum and Salmon flowered peas for next year..the hunt is on  :D

My Alderman have started to really scuttle up the mesh frame unadied, so we'll see that happens.

I've another few heritage varieties to possibly seed save from, these are:

Gladstone
Commander
Clarke’s Beltony Blue
Epicure
Ne Plus Ultra  Tall
Ostgotaart

All from the HSL, but only 10 peas of each.
