should i pick peas?
« on: June 11, 2011, 19:29 »
Hi
I've never grown peas before. I noticed today that my plants have lare, flat pods on them. Do I pick them to eat as mange tout and stimulate new growth - or leave all pods to develop peas. Also - how long do  the peas take to form on average?
thanks
Phil

unless you are growing a mangetout variety, then I find the pods too stringy to eat... so leave them to develop...
I'm not sure how long they take...i just look at them longingly every day till they are

i ate a couple of pods of under developed peas this morning - they were so sweet it was fantastic! can't wait until they are fully developed.

Only if less peas is what you really want!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'm so jealous. I started sowing peas the first week in April, and not even a single flower so far. In fact, of all the pea and bean types I sowed (apart from broad bean), the only thing showing flowers at all is the borlotti beans.

I'm a bit thick when it comes to things like this ... so bear wth me....do peas grow one pod per flower like strawberries do - I thought that they were like runner beans and kept producing more flowers and more beans/fruit

One pod per flower, all you can do is pick when the peas are ready and don't let them go to far.

They'll run out of steam much quicker than runner beans.
