cucumbers being naughty
« on: May 29, 2011, 23:25 »
I am growing 3 types outside to find the best for me and I'm sure I saw on here that they will cross-pollinate and produce different cues from the intended ones?
Should I try to keep them separate? Surely some will come true?
It will be a pain  :( because they were all going in the broad bean bed when they've finished.....

Unless you are wanting to save seed from them I doubt if cross-pollination will make the slightest difference to the fruit.

Correct!

Cross pollination only affects the seed of this generation, not the fruit. It can affect the flavour of some veg, such as sweetcorn, where you eat the seed. However, as you're hopefully going to eat the cucumbers before the seed mature, it won't make a scrap of difference.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

But do check the packets as some varieties require male flowers to be removed, as they are bitter if pollinated at all.

Tis all quite complicated with cukes I think.....ordinary open pollinated ones, all female f1 (mostly greenhouse types) and ones to remove male flowers from  That's why reading the packets is important  :)

Sadly I think it is becoming more complicated :(

Outdoor varieties (that need pollinating) that can be grown in a greenhouse, and indoor F1 all-female varieties that can be grown outdoors :(

http://www.allotment-garden.org/greenhouse/seeds/cucumber.php

"Cucumber : Swing F1 Hybrid

An all female 'American slicer' ideal for both outdoor and greenhouse growing. Plants produce a heavy crop of slightly spined dark green fruits 20cm (8in) long with a crisp, juicy flesh.

Oh for heaven's sake

Quite, I do think we make heavy weather of it at times. If you chose to grow outdoor varieties indoors, your problem if they pollinate others, read the packet.

If you grow an all female outside, then the question doesn't arise. Simples.

They all need pollinating so will be fine.

I didn't think you liked the Long White last year
