Herbs'n'stuff!
« on: May 31, 2011, 19:11 »
Couple of herby questions.....

Our parsley is going great guns and we should eat more of it than we do, but today I noticed what can only be described as foam on some of the bottom stems/leaves.....almost like spittle? What is it? Good / bad / ignore?

Also, we have had for the second year, real trouble growing chives. They seem very weak, spindly little things and nothing like we have bought/eaten from shops. Any tips? Ditto really for spring onions which we have tried this year from seed.
From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

The frothy foamy stuff on your parsley is probably cuckoo spit - if you remove the froth you will probably see a small insect. They protect themselves by forming the foam. The best way to remove is to spray with water.

Regarding the chives and spring onions - they need space, water and good soil or compost to grow - but they can also be quite slow growing, especially the spring onions.

My chives didn't really get going til their second year.................and spring onions seem to take forever to fatten up unless conditions are perfect  ::)

Spring onions my way:

Do them in modules, seed tray insert, 20 cells to a half tray.

Pinch of seed in each, germinate somewhere warmish, then move outside.

When about 3" high plant in final postion, still in clumps, no need to thin. Keep sucessions going.

Germination is better and faster using this method.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Are the parsley safe to eat then? Also is the froghopper harmful, the net doesn't really say if good or bad for growers!

Chives never seem to get to 3" high as the green shoots are so thin they lay flat. We are growing in pots with other herbs. So what's an 'ideal' condition for them then? I thought spring onions were an easy to grow plant?

Quote from: RHS
Apart from producing the 'spit' these insects have little detrimental effect on plants and can be tolerated.

If considered unsightly, they can be wiped off by hand or dislodged with a jet of water from a garden hose.

It is not worth using an insecticide against froghoppers.

An easy way to get your chives growing faster is to get a pot of growing ones from the supermarket, use the tops and split the base in two , with about an inch or two of growth still left on, and plant them in a sunny spot, keep watered till they start to grow.

Welcome to the site by the way! :D

Thanks!

And thanks for welcome! I joined a few days back (same username) but a mixture of Jack Daniels, late night and having too many pages open at once I managed to delete my membership here instead of another forum.... ::) :D Anyway, rectified now....
