Using panes of glass on soil
« on: May 27, 2011, 10:21 »
The OB on the plot next door has a fantastic seed bed going with a couple of cold frames and also some panes of glass. Being new, we've been watching and trying to learn a bit.

He's got a couple of panes flat to the ground- is he just warming the soil, or is it possible to start seeds under flat glass?

I ask because we have a couple of big panes I was going to use on top of some drawers with the bases knocked out, like a mini cold-frame.

Would ask him myself but our paths don't often cross.

Soil warming, I'd think.

Seedlings need a bit of head room when they first emerge!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Before you do, perhaps you should check your allotment rules. Ours doesn't allow glass to be used on site (although I believe glass already there is permitted).

It seems our only rules are about structures and keeping livestock.

We inherited a big chest of drawers with the shed and plan to the drawers with the bottoms knocked out to shelter seedings.

We may also use the unit with plastic or glass over to protect the tomatoes when they go in but not sure if they'd get enough sun. (or is it a good thing if they're still not used to being in full sun to limit it initially).

I really need to get a move on. we've no brassicas in yet, need to resow carrots and didn't know about over-wintered onions not keeping (i'm sure wherever i bought them from claimed they would keep ???). We do have garlic and shallots.

Will see how we do with salad onions instead
