I want to grow parsnips for taste. I dont mind what they look like or how big they grow ( though I was impressed DD  ). I just want to know which is the sweetest.

A roasted one..

Seriously, I have not noticed any difference in the taste of different varieties, but they are lovely coated in olive oil and roasted.

Exactly the way I love to cook them   :D delicious.

I started growing my own last year after tasting the most wonderfully sweet parsnip in the Spanish Pyrenees.

I grew tender and true and although they were delicious they weren't quite as fantastic as the ones I had roasted in Spain. I wondered if there was a variety you all could recommend that would really get those taste buds going.

Don't start harvesting them until they have had a good frost on them (so for my money no point growing an Early Variety for Autumn Harvesting ...)

Make then grow down for water early in the year. I don't normally water mine until perhaps July ... but this year I have been watering them since start of May as we have had not rain to speak of since beginning of March :( be interesting to see if they are less sweet as a result this year.

I've only ever grown "Tender and True" but our guests rave about them (if they are lucky enough to be invited for Sunday Roast !!)

Hi clare I grew gladiator last year and they where so sweet, but I do agree they where at their best about Feb - March.  I sowed the seed end of March 2010.

I'm sticking with tried & tested "Gladiator". (Go well with my "Centurion" onions  )
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've grown a few varieties over the years but I've stuck with Gladiator for the last few (I still look more like an orangutan than Russell Crowe though!)

I thnk the nervous tension waiting for them to germinate just leaves me feeling relieved to finish up with a good crop (I'm not sure I can really tell the difference between the popular varieties, although "the frost thing" does improve the sweetness.)

Clareblues: we have a few members living in Spain who might post here to say what varieties are popular there!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older
