Why feed corn in the afternoon not the morning
« on: May 14, 2011, 10:24 »
All the posts I read say they feed corn in the afternoon, is there any special reason for this?  I have always fed it in the morning so that they have eaten it all and don't leave any lying around for pests.
I dog, 1 cat, 1 horse, 1 Light Sussex, 2 Speckledys, 2 Cuckoo Maran:)

if you feed them it just before bed the heat generated from digesting it keeps them warm especially in the winter. if you feed it in the morning you must ensure that they also eat plenty of there regular food be it pellets or mash.

Ah that makes sense.  I only give them a handful each and they eat plenty of pellets too so hopefully that's o.k.  They go mad as soon as I open the back door in the morning so I feel a bit mean not giving them a treat in the morning. ::)

It's important that your girls get plenty of pellets as these contain all the nutrients they need. If you feed corn in the morning then they'll fill up on it and eat less pellets. Corn should be given as a treat or supplementary food. My girls only get a handful of corn between them (although I choose to give this at lunchtime if I'm around). If you only feed a scattering of corn I guarantee there won't be any left for pests!

To be honest they seem just as happy if I scatter pellets, they just seem to prefer to forage for their food than eat it out of their feeder and I guess it keeps them busy.
