Rogue Hen or boredom??
« on: September 02, 2007, 09:22 »
Hi

New to the forum so hi to everyone -  and haven't kept hens for years and years.

Straight in with a problem....         just a couple of weeks ago took delivery of 6 discarded hens - 62 weeks..  to old to produce apparently (i won't go on)

Anyway i have a bit of a problem and i'm not sure if its a rogue hen.  I have lost one hen a couple of days ago - the other were pecking her rear end and wouldn't leave her alone- very blooming!    Moved her - tried to clean her up but she just gave up.

Thought nothing of it really one of those things - BUT this morning i let out the chickens and they are all blooming again.   I have isolated the one they have been pecking - rear end again!    Don't know what to do now  -  i will watch them today to see whats going on - but advice would be great.

yours hopefully

Amandal

they are stressed me thinks . hang up lettuces on string in the shed and the coop and also corn on the cob helps .this will keep them occupied .clean up the blooming hens and paint with louse mite powder /spray spray the affected ares this wil taste orrible and also help them stop pecking , other than that go and buy some anti pecking bits from the poultry suppliers and install these ( very easy to do ) this will stop it
still alive /............

Purple spray (from the horsey shop) is antiseptic and good at camoflaging wounds to stop pecking.   I've used anti-peck rings to stop feather pecking.  You can also get bumper bits from the Wernlas Collection :

As well as all the great advice already given, I just wanted to say that I use Tea Tree cream (boots chemist or any health food shop) on all my animals, including chickens, that get any cuts or scratches. It not only acts as an anti septic but is also a great healing aid. I have noticed that when I use it on my Chooks the smell and taste puts the others off pecking, an added bonus!
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

Thanks a lot guys..

I go armed with lots of options on my hunt today..   I work above a horsey shop so that may be the best option as my nearest poultry suppliers are shut when i can get to them even at lunch time..

Thanks again
