Sungold tomato
« on: April 27, 2011, 00:11 »
I bought a sungold tomato plant on the spur of the moment (as you do!).
Would it be better grown in the greenhouse or planted outside when it gets a bit warmer.
Thanks

Elaine

If we have yet another year when tomatoes are hit by blight I'd keep it safe in the greenhouse.

I have a feeling that Sungold may be an indoor cherry-type variety.
Was it an F1 do you know?

In the greenhouse is best, outdoors is far more risky. Sungold are good tasty toms 40-50mm diameter, the skins on the ones i grow always seem to be a bit on the tough side though.

They are a cordon (need staking and pinching out of sideshoots) and I have successfully grown them outside in pots for years.
I think they're my favourite tom; small, orange, sweet and much earlier than some others.
Don't put them outside til after the last frost (end of May). I keep mine in one of those zippy greenhouse shelving things and have had the flap open for a while now. Mind you, I have a very sheltered garden.
If you use a sunny window sill make sure you harden off for a week or two.
With a feed every week or two as soon as the first truss has set and regular watering you may be eating your own toms by the end of June and you'll never want to buy a shop one again! (I can taste them now.....)
Good luck!

Having read so many recommendations for their excellent flavour I'm trying Sungold for the first time this year.

I usually grow:
  • Bambino (small red cherry with the most beautiful taste) and the seeds are much cheaper!!
  • Gardener's Delight - a solid stand-by

as well as one or two other standard sized tomatoes.

I've added "Sweet Million" this year as it's low growing and will suit a spot along the front window of my Dad's conservatory.

I usually grow some inside and some outside, they do well either way, till blight descends! >:(

I've also grown them outside in pots for years without problems. I also thought they tasted better grown outside rather than in the greenhouse.

Thanks for your replies, sounds like they will survive in or out so I think I will have to make my own mind up as both answers posted  is often the case
I am keeping my tomatoes at home as I have never yet succeeded it taking a healthy tomato home from the allotment.
I am growing red cherry, gardeners delight and tumbling tom from seed. They are all in the greenhouse till the end of may. The sungold was a passing fancy in the garden centre as I remember people saying they were tasty and it is a nice sturdy plant.

Sungold are the ones I grow every year.  Tastewise, though less prolific, I would say that black cherry grown in ideal conditions are the tastiest cherry toms by far.  :)

I first tried them (black cherry) 3 years ago and have grown them every year since..........I prefer to pick them when they still look a little under-ripe, rather than when they are black/red ;)

Yes, agree.  Grow them right and pick early they are fantastic.  They look as if they ought to be poisonous, but I would never go a year without a couple of plants.

This sounds very interesting.... I'll try hard to remember to add them to my seed order for next year if I can find them.

I read the Poll about 'taste v's yield' on tomatos and bought some of these seeds this year on the results given my fellow forumites.....thank you, i look forward to the results!.  However, as usual, i may have overdone the amount of various tomato plants i have space for ::)

If anyone in the Maidenhead/Windsor area would like to try a rather (already) large sungold plant, get in touch....there are probably a few going spare :D

p.s. also a few other tomato varieties as well........what was i thinking?..... :D
