Ducklings & drinkers
« on: April 18, 2011, 16:48 »
My ducklings are already growing like mad things, I swear you can see them growing through the day!  They are making a right royal mess of their brooder - I had heard that ducklings are mucky but they are outrageous  The poo is one thing (or many many things - do they ever take a break?) but they are constantly dabbling in the water drinker and flinging the water about.  That is my main concern, I know they are water birds but it can't be healthy for the babes to be constantly damp, they are soaking the shavings even with two clean-outs a day.  I have a chick water drinker with the disc holes but is there a type (& supplier if poss) that you would recommend to minimise this activity? Thanks.

I would try the chick water drinker but keep an eye to ensure that they can get water from it. They are not waterproof as small babies so it is not a good idea to let them get wet ALL the time. Sorry I cannot help more than that. Good luck.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

I found my ducklings to be exactly the same.  Messy smelly little things and it doesnt matter how small you make the drinker access they will find a way to make the mess ;)

Just a case of keeping up with the cleaning im afraid!

I feared as much, thanks.  I suppose that is why nature had to make them so cute - messy little stinkers :)
