Something for peas to climb on. Question.

Most people seem to be using this orange plastic mesh.  Anyone know where this can be found?  Would you plant peas alternately either side of it once erected?

Do you mean THIS sort of thing? As you can see, it can be purchased online and probably from builders merchants, but its pretty ugly. :( If "most people" are using it why not ask where they are getting it from.... :) I hope the answer is not building sites!

We have lots of spare temporary stainless steel mesh fencing on our site (the stuff that is put around building sites while work is going on)

Ive made permanent pea trellis with this and some 3x2 wood.  Now all I have to do is just plonk this in once I've planted the peas every year.  One trellis per 2 rows of peas.

At 40 odd pounds per sheet to buy, they're a good thing to have going spare..

I know! They are nowhere near new though...they come from the cement factory nearby once they are passed their usable quality.

I use the green pea/bean mesh netting but make sure you buy the square type as the diamond mesh is awful to use as it pulls in all the wrong directions and you can't get a proper structure with it. You need proper supports like hedging posts at either end and perhaps a stout bamboo cane or two in the middle. Don't cut off the netting height-wise but tie it down on to the top bit of netting. If your peas/beans outgrow the height, then tie an extra cane onto the supports and tie on the surplus netting to whatever height you want/need.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I use last year's raspberry prunings - once dead and dried out they make good climbing twigs rammed in along the row - and FREE!

I tried that once but the old canes were too dry and brittle by later in the season, and broke under the weight of the peas and in some wind.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Looking at the DD pics in the link posted by lucywil, they look like supports more than something for peas to climb on?  I did something similar last year with my broad beans just to stop them getting blown over by the wind.  Is this all they need?

I've only ever used sticks I've found, I'm quire sheltered so wind isn't really a problem. I think it looks pretty too!

I have put the first of this year's peas in, but am wondering whether to use pea nets or just canes.  I have always used pea nets before but don't really like having the tangly plastic things around the plot as I'm sure they're a hazard to wildlife.

Will my peas do okay without nets, or is there any alternative to nets anyone can suggest?
