Peas - pigeon question?
« on: April 30, 2009, 12:38 »
Have sown some peas and transplanted some others to our plot.  We have netted them (debris netting) and other than the pesky pea beetle? they are doing well.   Do I need to keep them netted throughout their growing time and when they have peas on them?
A couple of plots down he said he is removing his netting after a while and ours will be a pain in the preverbial to keep untying the debrisd netting, so do the pesky pigeons eats the peas or just the leaves when growing or young?

Having got to about 2" high, I've taken the netting off mine. The support stakes & twine are in position.

The nets will have to go back on when the pods develop to stop the pigeons making helicopter landing pads on them. I find at this stage they don't bother about them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

We have a bloke on our allotment who keeps racing pigeons, and up to now, they've never ever landed on any plots.  They just fly around in circles and that's it.  Basically, I got more damage off insects than the birds.

Pigeons ate the flowers off our peas last year. They have never done that before, but everyone nets their brassicas now so they are going on to other crops.

One bird I really, really hate are the wood pigeons with all that blooming cooing >:(  When I go camping, no matter where I go, they're waiting to wake me up at 5:00 in the morning.  I could go camping in the saraha and there they'll be, on top of the telegraph pole, or in this case, a sand dune :tongue2:
