How to manage a Duck Pond ?
« on: April 15, 2011, 22:25 »
What is the best way to manage a duck pond without running water ? Should it be emptied completely from time to time or just topped up now and then.

Hi

A couple of years ago I reared 25 mallard for our shoot from day old chicks. The amount of poop they make in relationship to their size , is unbelivable something to do with a simple gut system. I had a bath in the run that the water had to be changed every day. If I let a few stray onto our fish pond the first thing they do is poop in the water and sent it cloudy >:(.  My sister has a six in her garden and the pond water is changed reulaiiy ir it becomes foul.

Staffies are softer than you think.

About 8ft by 8ft and 3ft deep. there are only 3 ducks using the pond so it does not get to messy, but will the water need changing it's quite green.

I would empty it out and clean it weekly as it's not that large.

We've got a biggish pond with 2 grown geese on & thats emptied weekly. It's about 4 foot deep & 8 ft x 4ft. Also had ducks in the past on it too. Both poo lots which sits as sediment on bottom. In summer it turns the water green if left a bit too long. I use a submersible pump & thick drain hose direct into the drain. It absoluetley stinks!! Great on the garden though. Then refill with garden hose.

All waterfowl love a pond.

I have an old bath, it is sunk to its rim on top of a gravel filled soakaway so I can let the plug out, then I have to run water through until the sludge drains off (I scoop most of it up in a little bucket first). I
do this each week - if you leave it longer, esp in warm weather the pong is indescribable!! And people wonder why I don't let them use my garden pond
3 o'clock is both too early and too late to start anything - Sartre said so.

yes, a large flexi bucket (builders bucket). I had to use this the other day to clean out the pond again as my pump broke. It was a real bind too. I'm getting another pump asap.

Lugging buckets of water is no fun.

There's a tradition in some parts of the world to raise carp in duckponds to make the best use of the nutrient rich water.  Not practical with a small volums of water..

Update: cleaned the pond , had to use a bucket because the siphon was clogged up  :( . It was not too smelly, must be because the pond is under a tree and in the shade. There was only 6inches of silt. Thanks for all the information and help  :)
