Outdoor Toms', Too late?
« on: April 15, 2011, 19:52 »

Is it too late to even start some outdoor tomatos?

Up here in the North East, the weather is a bit 'safer' shall we say
and with our plot being south facing, them few days last week it was fantastic along the fence, so warm and very, very sheltered  :D

So I was thinking tomatos and/or peppers.

Thoughts......?

Me neither, it's a job for next weekend or the one after that
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

the problem might be you will be left with lots of green toms. but who cares. Thats the best reason to make green tomato daal or chutney.  :)
I do start outdoor toms early (feb) and g0t 3-4 flushes of toms last year. the only problem with starting early is they become too huge to be indoors at night.

I started mine early and they're in 3inch pots in the conservatory now because my greenhouse isn't up. I've been wondering how big they'll be by the time I can safely put them out and do I need to pot them on into bigger pots soon, the smallest are about 3 inch high and the biggest 6 inch.

You can't plant them outdoors until there is no further risk of frost and the temperatures are warmer both by day and night (not an exact science especially after last year's late frosts!)

They will certainly need potting into something larger than 3" before then.  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Sorry to jump in here. I have some seeds shooting in pots how big do they need to be before planting over into a grow bag in a greenhouse/coldframe? Tey are almost an inch high now.

I'd have thought minimum 6", and sturdy not weak and leggy.
