three blackcurrants and a gooseberry, yes.  Put the raspberries somewhere else.  Why four? raspberries are usually sold in packs of at least five and multiply up very quickly

Subject to the variety of Blackcurrant you were thinking of I would consider reducing those to just 2 bushes. They can grow with quite a wide spread and you may need room to be able to move around them to get to the raspberries.

We have just planted one blackcurrant, Baldwin, which the label claims is suitable for small areas.

Depends on the location of the bed and how you intend laying out the bed planting wise, as Gillie says, Raspberries multiply well.

Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

Firstly apologies if you think I'm hi-jacking this thread, but the title says it all - I'm sure a mod will split it off if I'm doing wrong.

Talking to the neighbouring plot holder this w/e about fruit bushes, I mentioned I would have to get a net over mine soon to prevent the bullfinches from eating the buds - he said that this won't be a problem with the blackcurrants, only redcurrants, also that the gooseberries would be immune, although I'd have to watch out for sawfly on these.

Is he right about not needing nets to keep bullfinches off? And what do I need to do for sawfly?

Bullfinches usually go for apple trees, but I suppose they could attack currants though they have never damaged my bushes.

There is information about gooseberry sawfly here:
