brassica problems
« on: February 24, 2011, 21:52 »
I decided to start some calabrese and cauliflower on my windows a few weeks back.  They germinated ok and were sown in pots 15cm deep to avoid them becoming pot bound.  However, just as the first true leaves began to appear the seedlings seems to be dying.

This occurred last year when I tried sprouts and calabrese.

Can anyone offer any advice? I've dedicated a large part of my plot to brassicas but now I'm worried.

Help!

are they still on the window ledges?

They really don't like to be inside in the warm :(

Yeah, on the kitchen window ledge... thecwarmest room in the house but also the one that is south facing and gets the best light.  Doh!

Put them in a kitchen cupboard for a while where it's darker and give them a quarter of a  cold egg cup of water every few days to revive and refresh?  Just a thought?   :tongue2:

I sincerely hope that was not a serious suggestion.

Brassicas need the light, but NOT the heat.

If you have the facilities you can sow earlier, the brassicas I sowed earlier in the year in a frost free, but cold greenhouse are doing well and are just at the potting on stage.

This lot will have to be slung, no doubt, but there's plenty of time to start. If you have nowhere like a cold conservatory, greenhouse or cold frame, you will have to wait a bit before you can sow directly outside.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
