tomato plants fall over
« on: February 02, 2011, 07:13 »
last year was my first on my lottie, i grew quite a few tomato plants but as they  developed tomatos the plants all fell over, i was trying to stake them up with bamboo canes but i ended up loosing lbs of lovely tommys to the slugs and them going bad because of laying on the floor.
i dont want the same to happen this year so how to i stake them and do i remove any leaves, because the other problem i had is, i couldnt see some of the tomatoes because of the plants being to bushy.

Have a look at the tomato growing guides:

HERE

perhaps particularly the bits about growing on and pinching out.

To keep bush varieties off the ground erect a horizontal rail about 18"-20" off the ground along each side of each row of toms. The toms just 'flop over them and usually stay off the ground (as in lower right of picture).

So you wouldn't know if they were bush type or cordon anyway!

Are you growing your own this year, hopefully you are, then you'll know how best to deal with them.

i know they were bush because when he gave them to me he said some had to go into hanging baskets because they were tumberlers/tumberling ? and the others went in the ground as they were bush.
ive had a look at the link and got some good info from that.
ive bought 4 different types of tom seeds for this year to see what i like best and for colour variety, money maker, black cherry, yellow pear and amish paste.
cant wait to get started :-)

Can't beat a bit of trying different varieties, but I think once you've sampled others you may be disappointed with the flavour of Moneymaker, however, they will still beat supermarket ones hands down.
