True or false?
« on: January 05, 2011, 16:00 »
I'm told that potatoes should not be grown on land that has been used for chrysanthemums.

Has anyone else heard this?

An internet search hasn't helped me find an answer?

Your help appreciated.  :)

The above is quite scientifically detailed but I'm sure you can pick out some relevant information.

Seemingly there's something called the potato spindle virus which is instigated by the recent presence of chrystanths. But more to the point is, does this particular virus even exist in the UK?

Unless you're growing commercial quantities of chrysanths, I wouldn't really worry about this. Most likely, even some lotty grown chrysanths will nullify problems during rotations.

Ive also seen that you cant grow them where youve previously had strawberries, or is it the other way round?   ::)

Piddle!! I mean "fiddle".

That's gone and complicatoed things even more!

I think I'll pretend I didn't know about that at all.

Thanks for the information Trillium... I will read e v e r s o  carefully and see if I can make head & tail of it.

My uncertainty began when first my mother then my father informed me that potaotes can be bitter if grown on land used during the previous 2 years for potatoes. So I wondered if anyone else knew about this.

"Sad chrysanthemums upset sick potatoes" link provided by Trillium

As my grandmother would have said in response to anything a little conpuzzling: "Ooo er!"

So... perhaps if my chrysanths were not badly belted by chrysanthemum blight (will have to read it again!!) and my potatoes do not have or do not develop a virus I (or rather "they") might be OK.  :nowink:

Why oh why can things become so difficult just when you've sorted your lotties plans in your head?

I've never heard that before. On occasion we've grown potatoes in the same spot for a second year, or our rotation had us in the same spot a year later, and we've never ever had bitter potatoes. You'd risk encouraging potato diseases but bitterness wouldn't be one of them. That would actually be something like too acidic soil rather than non rotation.

Obviously an old wives & husbands tale.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Obviously an old wives & husbands tale.

I'm hoping so as I'd planned to put a row or two of spuds where the chrysanthemums went last year.

I'll let you know if the old "persons" tale proves correct!  ::)

Ok... so I was tired when I wrote the last line above   It should have said:

"My uncertainty began when first my mother then my father informed me that potaotes can be bitter if grown on land used during the previous 2 years for potatoes chrysanthemums."

...so following on from the first post.
