Perch Query
« on: December 13, 2010, 22:02 »
I am new to keeping chooks so another query. My birds have the run of my entire garden by day and they are perching on the underneath of our glass garden table which is situated on our patio next to the back of the house. The do not have any other perches in the garden apart from those that are in their nest box so I am thinking of making a couple of  around the garden. Any tips for doing this? i.e size/height and where to locate

What ever you do make sure they are not situated in a position that allows the hens a 'leg up' to get over fences into your neighbours garden.

I have made some perches from 2 x 2 (inch) timber, cut to about two foot six long. These I have rounded off two edges to make them more comfortable. Then I have screwed them to pieces of 4 x 2 timber about 10 to 12 inches long ( one at each end of the perch). This makes the height about six inches from the ground so if your table legs are higher than that they will prefer to perch under the table. I have finished mine with some coloured wood preserver. As they are free standing I move them around the garden as and when necessary.

That sounds like a good idea. A perch that can be moved

Could it be that they are trying to get out of the wind and/or rain as well ?
My girls' favourite perch is situated in the corner of the garden, surrounded on two sides by two bits of corrugated sheet that make up the corner between an outbuilding and the boundary fence (if that makes any sense)
They have about 6 perches to choose from around the garden and that seems to be the one they use the most
I must admit I've put a roof over it as well, so it now sort of resembles a chicken - sized smoking shelter
I think I read somewhere that perches should ideally be 10 - 12" high but don't quote me on that
Hope this helps
It's all good in da wood
