Possible tape worm in chickens
« on: December 12, 2010, 18:21 »
Hi, I am new to this forum and am not sure how it all works.  I have a question about my chickens.  Not a nice subject but has to be spoken about at some point!  Its thier poo!  I have noticed small white egg like bits in thier poo.  When the poo is fresh the little things move and elongate then looking more like tape worms.  I have a photo but am not sure how to upload it to the forum. Can anyone help me?

Hi Gibbo and welcome,

I'm no expert but it sounds like they may need worming with Flubenvet

I treated them with flubenvet about three weeks ago and started a new course of treatment again yesterday.  Hopefully this will do the trick.

Hello there,

Welcome to the forum and the wacky world of henaholics.

I would agree that flubenvet is a good idea.  It does sound very much like worms.
Good Luck and keep us posted.

Sound like you are doing the right thing with the Flubenvet. Maybe your birds had a particularly heavy infestation and the Flubenvet is doing it's job. I don't think you have too much to worry about especially if your hens are generally fit and well.

I would say that you need to double the dose in the same way that you would for gapeworm..... It should have done the trick first time and killed the worms.... so if it hasnt then just repeating will probably not be very effective :(
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

To upload photos, click on 'additional options' when you reply to the comments, and you will get some options.  (if slightly obviously).  you will see a box underneath the 3 tick boxes,  and at the end is the 'browse' button.  click on that, make sure your picture is within the maximus dimensions and click post when you are done  ;) hope this helps x

I'm certain that is nothing to worry about gibbo.

It looks as though some snail, earth worm or slug eggs have become stuck to the outside of the poo.

I thought that it could be eggs at first but when a hen produced a fresh sample with the same thing I realised it must be from within the chicken. Also they moved and elongated when poked, looking more like tape worm segments that I sometimes find on my cat!

Fresh information for me now gibbo - I didn't read your original post.  It is entirely possible that they are tape worm proglottids (segments),  flubenvet at normal doses may not treat them and it will reoccur if the scolex (the head of the tapeworm) is not removed.  I'm not certain what the intermediate host is either but they will need removing or the hens will be reinfected from eating them.

My advice would be to consult a poultry vet about treatment and eradication.
