Rhubarb rhubarb
« on: July 12, 2007, 11:03 »
Realise this topic might be exhausted by now but there's a good article about combining gardens and hens  in the July Practical Poultry and she has this to say about rhubarb leaves:

"Mine always gorge themselves on rhubarb leaves in the spring. Though full of oxalic acid and poisonous to us, I think they use them as a spring purge to kill off internal parasites. I've never heard any convincing evidence about poultry having been affected by poisonous garden plants. Laburnum, yew, ivy and foxglove all flourish in my garden without adversely affecting its occupants. Obviously though you will have to desist from using pesticides and herbicides....." (Page 47)

Interesting,eh :!:  :?:  :D

Yes that's very interesting

I gave my flock some leaves the other day and they loved them!  Glad to hear they are not harmful.
