Finally got a plot!!
« on: September 05, 2010, 20:22 »
Well after two years waiting (not too bad considering) we've finally got a plot!!
It's about 1/2 mile from home and comes complete with 8' x 6' greenhouse, shed and water. I think it's a half plot, measures approx 5m x roughly 25/30m so around 125/150m square. It's not too bad considering it's been left for a bit. I have two long rectangle beds with a path up through the middle. At the end i have two large compost bins ready to go. The soil itself is on the heavier side (Tonbridge is a flood plain so ground is clay) but is reasonably loose and with a good dollop of chicken pellets and some well rotted horse poop it should be good to go fairly soon. Officially i can't take it on until 1st October but site administrator said i can come from now on to work on it. Very friendly chaps down there, had a good talk with them and they all chatted up the wife, offering raspberries and gooseberries! She was well chuffed. I KNOW we're going to just love it there.......

Although i'm taking the 'as organic as much as poss' route, the site admin is going to roundup the weeds on it to enable me to get going ASAP. Am i right in thinking that roundup is only active on contact and one dose won't sit residually in the soil? Don't want to get too reliant on glyphosate..

Oh i can't beleive how excited i am by a small patch of earth and a dirty glasshouse!

Congratulations and it sounds a really nice friendly site  :D

Yes, glyphosate becomes inert on contact with the soil so you do not have to wait for a period of time before using the soil.  Allow a good couple of weeks for it to work before starting to chop roots up though
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Congratulations to you both. You're excited now, just wait until you start planting and better still when you start havesting. There's nowt better tasting than your own home grown veg. I'm in my 1st year and loving every minute of it, it's hard work and a huge learning curve, this site is great, there's loads of advice on here and like others have said please post some pics, good luck
