How close do you grow your tomato plants?

When I logged in this afternoon, John's home page was showing photos from an allotment competition in July 2008

http://www.allotment-garden.org/allotment_vegetables/allotment_vegetables_dyn.php?MonthNumber=7&Year=2008

The winning allotment has what I think are a lot of tom plants in the foreground. They look to be planted pretty close together, though perhaps that's just an effect of the photo.

How close do you plant your tom plants such as Shirleys or Gardener's Delight?

And what about Marmande-type plants?

I grow Vanessa and are not more than 18" apart.  If they get a bit too bushy, I just snip the leaves off to let more light get to the tomatoes :D

My veg beds are only 6" deep, so if I grow cordon toms I put them in pots. In the beds I grow bush toms and I kind of like them fairly close because they support each other. I've got them crammed in about 12" apart and I've had very big crops from them.  That includes Red Alert (smallish bush), Legend (big) and Pomodoro Roma Nano (big).

About 18 inches apart for me with cordons but I found this was a bit close for Roma which can be a bit like triffids.

About 20 metres apart - one lot in the big greenhouse and the other lot in the small greenhouse with a winding path in-between  ::)
