The pots I have are 10 inches in diameter by 11 inches in hight, as you can see there are two plants per pot, is this OK? :?

I would only put one per pot to allow air circulation.  :)

You may get away with one to a 9" pot, but two to one pot is pushing it, IMHO. These plants get very large & the root system of one will fill a put.

Two plants are just going to rob each other.

You would no doubt get 2 weaker plants.

Sorry, I was trying to answer two questions in one go!

Yes, you probably would get away with one plant in a 9" pot!

meanwhile my tomato seeds have just germinated. methinks i'll be playing catch-up all year. i've only got into this lark this last 2 weeks though.

i've already been surprised by the amazingly rapid growth of my radishes in the last week so along with your words i think i might allow myself some optimism. i've decided not to worry so much about veg, pests, the weather and just take it as it comes and do my best. it's supposed to be fun after all.
