When you say home made greenhouse out of plastic and wood is it like the cloche things you get from B&Q as I would like do build one and try again next year to see what happens by growing them this way.

Not really, My grow house was made 4ft high with a slight slope to collect rain. It has to be about 4 feet high to give room for the foilage, if you grow a really big un the foilage will grow quite tall. I used Thick plastic sheets and Plastic roofing which i secured onto the wooden frame.  

Make sure you support the onions to keep the stem and neck straight to get a nice uniformed onion.
