Child's small business & the LAW?
« on: August 13, 2010, 14:45 »
Hi Everyone,

I have just registered as I thought this website has alot going on regarding my question :) ...& my apologies in advance if I am posting this in the wrong place!

My 10year old daughter has 7chickens & is selling eggs at £1 for a cartons of 6. She is selling to her teachers, friends mothers & some of the farm workers blah blah... When her customers are finished with them they return the cartons to her ( when they order again  normally).

She is doing this as she has her heart set on a "Go-kart" bless!

I would like to order in small bulk for her some new cartons, sticky labels, new trays etc.. as a little "extra" for her little business.. As I want to encourage her efforts in working for what she wants of-course... She has always had such large things on a plate b4.

So my Question is "as her clientele grows" > How much can she make legally at her age?

Rules?
Anything else I should know?
Any websites for her or I that u know off?

Any answers would be much appreciated & Thank-you for reading.. :D

God Bless

Nice to hear of such an enterprising young lady  :D

I don't think there are any limits re what she can earn legally.  The personal tax allowance for U65's is £6475 this tax year but you'd have to contact HMRC to find out whether she counts as an individual for tax purposes at her age, or whether any income she made was counted as yours and thus taxable at your rate.

I'll let those who know about chickens and eggs answer those questions!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

She can always ask for a donation towards the cost of the chickens upkeep say how about £1 for six eggs  ;). Legally she should use new egg boxes but if she took a bowl to school or those large egg trays then the people can pick the eggs up and place them in their recycled boxes  :)

With 7 chickens I don't think the tax man is going to want to waste his paperwork on her!  Good luck to her with her little enterprise!

And if she was buying those extra little bits herself, she'd probably be making a loss!  ;)  So start to worry when she's got 700 chickens!!!!   :D

I agree with GrannieAnnie.... don't put her off the commercial world by introducing her to tax and regulations... wait until she makes her first ten thousand and then make anonymous enquiries with the local tax office  ;)

I wish her good luck!

She has eggxactly the right idea.... a bit of personal effort will mean she really appreciates that go-cart once she has earnt it.  ;)

I would agree that it's unlikely that the tax man would be interested. However just in case. Keep ALL receipts for anything to do with the chickens. e.g. house, feeders, drinkers, pellets corn, purchase of new egg boxes etc. I should think that it will be a very long time before she will be in real profit in the tax mans eyes. It's lovely to see an enterprising young person. Well done for encouraging her.
