I was always told as a child that when I finishes a soft boiled egg I should turn the empty shell upside down and break it to stop witches making their home in it. It always sent a thrill up my back as I smashed the shell.

What 'old wives tales' were you told or tell your children around this subject? I'd love to hear.

I was told it was to stop the witches using it as a boat!    why were we so cruel to witches?  homeless and stranded at sea?

I was told that eating the crusts of bread would give me curly hair!! I had two blonde, curly haired brothers, while I had straight mousy brown hair.

I now have curly blonde hair, thanks to a wonderful hairdresser and still hate crusts, but chooks love them

I was told that if I touched the little bubble in the bottom of the shell after I had my 'dippy eggs' it would leave a wart on my finger!!

I love the witches "Stories". Just how scary could witches who were so tiny be?!

slightly off on a tangent, but apparently my husband was told not to eat oranges after dairy products as it would curdle in his stomach and make him sick!    He didn't really understand and thought it sounded quite violent and unpleasant - only as an adult he realised it was nonsense and could enjoy an orange yoghurt

Not to put your hands in the water an egg was boiled in as you could get warts.  I still throw the water away asap so that no one will use/touch it.

Mine said the witches used them as boats and drowned sailors!
