I love it when a plan comes together - OH and I are off on our holidays today (a short break to North Somerset via Monmouth - 'cause there is a very good curry house there and a Wetherlodge to drink beer in and stay in) - and the last of our melons (no. 5) has ripened to perfection just in time to take with us as a treat. 8)
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

Oh congratulations milkman.  Hope your melon tastes lovely!  My 3 only got to grapefruit sized when the plant decided to die, they wree okay with a bit of sugar on, but wouldn't ripen once they came off the plant!

Still, I've made a start, perhaps the next lot will fare better.

Have a lovely break, hope the weather stays nice for you.

Mine are still malteser sized and the plants look like dying back. Think it's all come a bit too late in the season, after the initial splurge of vegitation, followed by enough female flowers for a Wordsworth eulogy. :?

None of the 3 melons in pots have done anything apart from the odd male flower, but I planted one in the polytunnel when the others died, and its picked up and doing well, but no melons and its probably too late now for any to come.  Oh well, maybe next year!!!!

I don't want to brag but we've just eaten a fantastic melon which was the only one formed in the greenhouse.

I also have a small plot outside with 4 plants and about 12 melons.

My main problem is knowing when to pick them.  I suppose they will be later than the greenhouse one but how much later?

Do I need to protect them from frost?  I'm away for a whole week nexct week and wonder if I should leave them or pick them.

Any suggestions please.
I may not know what I'm doing but I might as well do something and see what happens.

Hi there lucy, they were Ogen melons, and they were gorgeous.

Realy easy to grow as well, just plant and water, i got 8 melons in the end from one plant.

I will be growing them from my own collected seeds next year. :!:
