best smelling/colourful herbs
« on: July 09, 2010, 20:56 »
My son has a visual impairement and I want to make him a little sensory herb garden.
I was wondering which are the best herbs to use for smell and colour of flowers etc.

I am very new to all this and would really appreciate a bit of guidence.  ???  ::)

thanx

I don't think anything smells nicer than mint when you brush against it. I'd buy mint perfume if I could :)

Thyme has a sweet little white flower. Chives have a nice big, bright flower.

Oh the Lemon Balm sounds nice.
I have bought mint, peppermint, thyme....oregano and curryplant so far.

I also have a lovely furry little alpine that has bright yellow flowers on that I might fit in there too cos he likes that.

Are there any I would be able to grow from seed right now or do I have to wait until a certain time of year to do that?

thanx for helping me out everyone I am taking on all your ideas. :)

most herbs are easy to grow from seeds.  As many are mediteranean in origin they like a sunny spot and well drained soil (add some grit) you can get lots in pots too so could have some on his window sill.  Rememebr to plant mint in a pot not the ground or it will take over and you will have nothing else!

And Chamomile. All of these should be available in small pots at your local garden centre, Colleen. :D

Wow, some great tips there I didn't know that about the grit and of course chives!! they get a big pink flowers dont they?

Might grow some basil/chives/ I have seed trays/propigater and compost feeling all green fingered.
We dont have much land but hubby has said he'll build me a planter for the garden for some herbs and maybe even a few veggies.....

Thanks for all your ideas :D

If you grow lemon balm be sure to not let it seed or it will be everywhere. ::)  I would also add Thai Basil to the list for sheer fragrance alone.
Cheese makes everything better.

Ditto sage.

Hyssop, tarragon, myrtle.

Might want to consider box as an edging plant as it has a wonderful musty scent after fain and might give olfactory interest once all the volatile herbs are over.

Lavender is also a herb and can be used to flavour biscuits as well as bing included in many 'herbes de Provance' mixes.

Not a herb I know, but I've got a pelargonium - the variety is 'P Tomentosum', it has a really strong peppermint fragrance, but even better than that, it has the softest, furry leaves - I stroke it every time I pass it! Oh it also has a white flower too; a wonderful plant!

Don't plant the mint direct into the garden or it'll take over.  Plant it in a pot and either sink the pot into the garden or leave it standing on the surface
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Its got to be lemon thyme - incredible smell, and very pretty flowers.  We cut ours and add to flower arrangements for the house.  Nice smell and good case filler.  Oh, and great with chicken  8)
