we are going to increase our veg plot into what is at present a field. Is it ok to apply glyphosphate to kill off the weeds and grass?

I don't see why not!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Best stuff you can use, make sure you leave it long enough for the roots to be killed.

We had to use roundup, it's totaly harmless to the soil but be aware that, like us, you may just have to apply a second lot to the obstinate weeds.  The only thing we found it didn't kill was bindweed.

If you want to kill bindweed you need to train the bindweed up a cane, when its about 4ft tall make up your weedkiller and pour into a jar. Slide the bindweed off the cane and place in the jar, cover the jar to keep the rain out and wait for the weedkiller to do its work.

Well, that's worth a try.  I wonder who experimented and found that one out.

If you use Gylphosate, surely once you've dipped it, that's it. No need to keep in the jar & cover.

We have used Roundup twice on one particular patch that has bindweed and it totally ignores it so I'm willing to try anything.

Wowsers! That's quite a method you've got there. It sounds like all out warfare! If I can't get my bindweed undercontrol this year I'm going to give this a go.

Half of our plot was sprayed with an agricultural strength glyphosate before we got it (pity we're organic  ::)) but all it's done is kill the couch grass. The dock and bindweed are loving their new found freedom and growing...well like weeds ....so you will pronably need to spray it several times to completely clear it.

...or you could cover the ground and plant through it?
